Corcelles is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

History

Corcelles may have been first mentioned in 1181 as Corcellis though there is some debate over this mention.[3]

Geography

Corcelles has an area, as of 2009, of 6.77 km2 (2.61 sq mi). Of this area, 2.81 km2 (1.08 sq mi) or 41.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.81 km2 (1.47 sq mi) or 56.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.16 km2 (0.062 sq mi) or 2.4% is settled (buildings or roads).[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.5% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.7%. 51.6% of the total land area is heavily forested and 4.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 7.5% is used for growing crops and 12.7% is pastures and 21.3% is used for alpine pastures.[4]

It is a ribbon village on the east end of the Grand Val (valley of Moutier), with some houses on Mont Raimeux.

Demographics

Corcelles has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 223.[1] As of 2007, 5.9% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 7.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (84.4%), with German being second most common (15.1%) and Italian being third ( 0.5%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 33% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (20.3%), the local small left-wing parties (18.7%) and the Green Party (12.2%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 29.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 54.6% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 15.6%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Corcelles about 66% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Corcelles has an unemployment rate of 2.26%. As of 2005, there were 32 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 9 businesses involved in this sector. 11 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 5 businesses in this sector. 29 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 4 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
